While working for
Hospitality Printing and Design, a firm that specializes in hotel
and restaurant marketing, I was given the opportunity to design and present
a new corporate identity for the MGM Grand Hotel.
The logo you see here was not actually designed for
the hotel, but for MGM Grand Corporation,
which owned numerous other properties. At
the time of the presentation, I believed
the circular "film can lion
emblem"
was so
prevalent and well known (it was even embedded in the
marble floors of the hotel lobby), that changing to what
became known as the "walking lion" should be a transitional process.
As a result, I designed a second logo for the Hotel itself
using the same type face shown here, but with a stylized
version of the "film
can lion". You will
see my concept for the Hotel's logo
on subsequent pages in this section.
On the next few pages, you will see how this new identity
was carried from print advertising to all forms of collateral.
